It has been 10 months since I started this #FreelanceJourney and it has been rather fulfilling. I am able to travel anytime I want to and am still able to work. I have amazing bosses (thankfully!) and every day has been a learning experience.
Part of my preparation prior to leaving my 9-5 job was ensuring I get a good HMO. I have been used to company-provided HMOs for more than a decade and that was one thing I needed to secure prior to making the jump. I have had good doctors in Cavite and of course, I had to start fresh again here in Cebu. After a few months of deliberation and checking with my freelancer friends - I decided to get an individual HMO from Maxicare.
Maxicare does offer Prepaid plans but I was not truly sold on how little they cover for consultation, you need to visit their Primary Care Clinics which can be a hassle, especially for me since the nearest one is in IT Park and I live in Lapu-Lapu. I also find it better to find the doctor I like as long as it is covered by my card. You can check their prepaid plans here.
You can check how much yours will be at this link: Maxicare Plan Estimate. I decided to go for the annual as it does save me about PHP3000+. I checked the site recently and there has been an increase for a 35-year-old principal member.
Plan options are the following:
I paid for my plan last year, got my card a few weeks later, and ensure you bring your card with you upon visit.
Here's a quick how-to video to help you navigate your way around the Plan Estimate page and here's another video on processing payment.
I have used my card three times in the span of four months - everything was covered. Also, make sure to check with the admitting officer/HMO officer at your chosen institution to be fully informed. Ask tons of questions and make sure that you have read the booklet the card comes with.
By the end of the year, I will share how to renew your current HMO plan.
